Amateure in Pyjamas

Gedanken zu Blogger, Old Media, Journalisten ...

Apropos Diskussion: Blogs, die billige Contentmaschine. Hier einige treffende Gedanken von Scott Rosenberg zu BorderCrossing und "über den Tellerrand hinausschauen ...":

Bloggers think they will raze the existing media establishment and replace it with something new. Some journalists think they can simply ignore the arrival of blogs as a new many-to-many news channel. Both groups are missing the reality of today's media ecosystem.

Good bloggers keep good journalists honest; good journalists read blogs and find sources and stories. There's constant foot traffic across this border. Trouble arises when people don't step across the line. (...)

The challenge for professional journalists today is to understand how their role has changed. Their readers and their sources and their subjects now have access to an open microphone. And much of the time, it's good stuff on that mike -- amazing stories and smart people and valuable information. Ignoring all that isn't just a missed opportunity; it's bad journalism. Only a hack could believe that ignoring the "amateurs in pajamas" is a smart course.

Bloggers, meanwhile, lose out if they choose to stand off and lob spitballs at the media machine instead of engaging with it in creative ways. They have an unprecedented chance to insert new information and ideas into the clotted and previously inaccessible media bloodstream. Blogging for its own sake is its own reward, to be sure. But blogging to set records straight and change minds and influence the public sphere -- that's too valuable to pass on.

WeMedia Webcast

We Media: The Impact of Participatory Media on Election 2004

Where's the news?
What're your views?

Do you see it on TV?
Do you follow faithfully?

Do you find it on the Net?
Is your mind firmly set?

Do you read it on your cell?
Does it make you mad as hell?

Do you believe or do you doubt?
On blogs and listervs, do you shout?

This is media, loud but unclear,
This is media, and the Vote's this year.

The Media Center presents a public webcast focused on the impact of new technologies and participatory media on the Nov. 2 U.S. elections. The nature and role of media is in the midst of transformation (see We Media). No longer are a handful of mainstream news outlets the only voices in a one-way information flow that ends with the audience.

The Internet, proliferation of powerful new communication technologies and bold innovations in older technologies are allowing users and audiences - including voters - to react to current events, to report and distribute new information and to share and debate their opinions as never before.

Political parties, advocacy groups and others are also empowered to get their message out - to motivate action, debate, fund raising and voting.

Through blogs, interactive Web sites and other emerging social networks, the audience has in fact joined the opinion-making media. This is the world of We Media - a participatory, diverse environment of opinions, ideas, journalism and activism that may change the nature of electoral politics.

Will it?

Jason McCabe Calacanis, founder of the Weblogs, Inc. Network, hosts a high-level panel of media thinkers and leaders in this exploration of the intersection of media, technology and society.

The panel will discuss:

- How have user attitudes and behaviors combined with technology to create new avenues for sharing information, and to what end?

- Who exactly is participating? How are traditional audiences responding?

- Has the political dialog been transformed, and if so, how?

- Are voters any better informed than in previous elections? Do they feel more empowered?

- Will there be an impact on the outcome of the elections?

Media Center events are always interactive. In this webcast, audience members will take part in audience polls and surveys concurrent to the panel discussions. They will be free to post thoughts and ideas to the online event space in response to the dialog, and be invited to participate in a Q&A segment.

Join us for an interactive conversation on Tuesday, October 5 at 2:00 pm eastern.

Wahl-Blogger - Backyardblog der Seattle Times

Die Seattle Times und ihre Wahl-Blogger starten das Backyard-Blog. Mit "Kommentarfunktion per E-Mail" und ersten "Konflikten":

Welcome to Backyard Blog, our group online journal for this election season. We've asked a broad array of people with deep ties to the region to share their views on politics during the 2004 campaign.

Editor's note: Today is the launch of the Backyard Blog project. We coincide with the opening of the Republican National Convention in New York City. As it happens, more writers from the left side of the political aisle weighed in than the right (does this mean something?) Let the blogging begin.

Classroom Web logs, or blogs, many of which got their start in the last school year, are becoming increasingly popular with teachers like Mrs. Dudiak as a forum for expression for students as young as the second-grade level and in almost any subject. In the blogs, students write about how they attacked a tough math problem, post observations about their science experiments or display their latest art projects.

For teachers, blogs are attractive because they require little effort to maintain, unlike more elaborate classroom Web sites, which were once heralded as a boon for teaching. Helped by templates found at sites like tblog.com and movabletype.org, teachers can build a blog or start a new topic in an existing blog by simply typing text into a box and clicking a button.
