The Blog-Only News Diet - Die Blog-News-Diät

Steve Outing präsentiert bei Poynter.org die Resultate eines News-Experimentes der besonderen Art:

Last week, blogger and public relations executive Steve Rubel conducted a news experiment: He gave up his regular media habits (newspaper, online, radio, and to a lesser extent TV) and learned what was going on in the world solely by checking weblogs.

His intent: See if at this stage in the evolution of blogging, weblogs are an adequate entry point to current events -- if they could replace more traditional forms for people who want to learn what's going on in the world.

Gender and the Net: Teenage Weblogs

Interessanter Artikel der BBC über eine Untersuchung von David Huffaker:

Previous studies on gender and the net have suggested girls communicate better, and more often, than boys. But US researcher David Huffaker's study of 70 blogs contradicts this. Contrary to prediction, the results indicate that there are more gender similarities than differences in blog use. However, some gender differences were noted, regarding emotive features, sexual identity, language use, and some components of personal information.

Blood for blogger.com

If keeping a blog means adding one or two more hours of "schedule" to your day, I predict that you will drop it in less than a month—the same reason many of us have difficulty maintaining an exercise program. But if, instead, a blog is an extension of an activity you already enjoy, I think that you will find the time you spend to be very rewarding.

To Their Surprise, Bloggers Are Force for Change in Big Media

Interessanter Artikel von Mark Glaser über Blogger und deren Einfluss auf Trad. Medien:

Des Bloggers Glaubwürdigkeit ...

Aus der N.Y.-times: Brian Stelter had an important editorial decision to make. A reader had sent him a tip that CNN planned to offer a video news service on the Web. Mr. Stelter was waiting for verification or denial of the item. The CNN public relations people in Atlanta had promised to get back in touch.

All this would simply be the mundane doings of daily journalism except that Mr. Stelter is not, technically, a journalist. He is a blogger, and his blog, Cablenewser.com, reflects his obsession with the cable news industry. Every day, about 3,500 readers consult his site to see what he has drummed up. They respond to the stories he posts; they send observations and comments for his consideration; they accuse him of bias, in all directions.

Beyond the odd fact that people pay attention to a Web log devoted to an industry already well covered in trade magazines is the additional curiosity that Mr. Stelter is an 18-year-old college student.

Blog reader survey - by Henry Copeland

Umfrage von Henry Copeland [ Blogads Weblog ] zum "unbekannten Wesen" der Blog-Leserinnen und -Leser:

Whether on the left or right, blog readers have traits in common that often are absent in today's public spaces: passion and initiative. Sharing these traits, blog readers of all political stripes seem more alike than different.

Likewise, blog readers are united in their apathy about traditional news sources: 82% of blog readers say that television is worthless or only somewhat useful as a source of news and opinion. 55% percent say the same about print newspapers. 54% say the same about print magazines.

Meanwhile, 86% say that blogs are either useful or extremely useful as sources of news or opinion. 80% say they read blogs for news they can't find elsewhere. 78% read because the perspective is better. 66% value the faster news. 61% say that blogs are more honest. Divided on so much else, blog readers appear united in their dissatisfaction with conventional media and their rabid love of blogs.

Traditionelle Medien, Blogs und die Technorati-Rangliste

JD Lascia berichtet in seinen New Media Musings vom Technorati Developers Salon: "What's shocking, in a way, is how quickly the top-tier blogs like Instapundit and BoingBoing already have more link authority than well-established news sites like Slate, Fox, Reuters, MSNBC and USA Today. This, only two years after blogs have taken off in a big way. Think about what the numbers will look like 10 years from now."
